Emergency First Aid at Work Course (EFAW)
Effective from 1st October 2009

Description
This new HSE approved qualification came effect on 1st October 2009, along with new guidance on assessing the needs of First Aid in your workplace. Your risk assessment of First Aid needs may well identify the need for Emergency First Aiders either as an addition to your First Aiders, or where the risk of your business is low. It may well identify them as being sufficient without the need of additional First Aiders.

Duration
A minimum of 6 hours consisting of theoretical and practical activities.

Syllabus
A range of subjects is covered including:

  • Responsibilities and reporting
  • Resuscitation
  • Angina
  • Assessment of the situation
  • Heart attacks
  • Choking
  • Basic hygiene in First Aid
  • Bleeding control
  • Shock
  • Dealing with an unresponsive casualty
  • Minor injuries
  • Seizures

Certification
Assessment is ongoing by the instructor, and a 3-year qualification will be issued to those who meet the criteria. In addition, the HSE strongly recommend that all students undergo an annual refresher programme of about 3 hours, although it is not mandatory.

Numbers
A maximum of 12 students are allowed and must be aged a minimum of 16 years or above. Bigger groups can be catered for, but the ratio must not exceed 12 students per instructor.
